Hiking vacation Allgäu

Forest hike

Syrgenstein Castle

The Schloss Syrgenstein loop starts and ends at the village square in Eglofs – right next to the Wanderhotel zur Rose. On this 15-km loop with a moderate elevation gain, you will discover the only preserved castle in the district of Lindau, which is now owned by the Waldburg-Zeil family. You can find the Syrgenstein Castle loop on Komoot.

Forest hike

Osterwald circuit

This loop also starts directly at the village square. Over a distance of around 10 km, you will discover the beautiful Osterwald forest, which is easy to walk on wide forest paths. After the first half of the hike, you can take a break and stop off at the Badwirtschaft Malleichen. You can find the Osterwald route on Komoot.

Mountain railroad tip

Hochgratbahn & Nagelfluhkette

Fans of mountain tours should not miss a hike on the Hochgrat. You can reach the highest mountain in the West Allgäu on foot from the parking lot or conveniently by cable car. At an altitude of 1,834 meters, the summit is part of the Nagelfluhkette – a nature park that straddles the border between Germany and Austria. Hiking along the Nagelfluhkette is one of the best leisure activities, giving you a wonderful view of the Allgäu landscape. There are also countless opportunities to stop for refreshments in rustic mountain huts along the way.

Castle hike

Three-Castle-Round

Neuschwanstein Castle is a must-visit when hiking in the Allgäu. Discover the royal castles during your hiking vacation: the Three Castles Tour starts and ends in Füssen and takes you through the lake-rich foothills of the Alps to the castles of Hohenschwangau, Neuschwanstein and the High Castle. This tour offers great views and is exciting for the whole family.

Chapels around Eglofs

Hummelberg circuit

The 7-km Hummelberg loop also starts at the village square in Eglofs. From there, the trail descends into Eglofstal, where the Marienkapelle chapel and the Lourdes Grotto are located. The hiking route continues towards Mühlbolz and Hummelberg, where you will find the 19th century Hofkapelle chapel. The route continues to Aschen and Reute, where you can enjoy the beautiful Alpine panorama. Shortly before Aschen, you can take a detour to the Bühl Chapel. Further information can be found on Outdooractive.

Family hiking tip

Walk in the Eistobel

Not far from Eglofs is a popular excursion destination. In the Eistobel between Maierhöfen and Grünenbach, the Obere Argen has eaten 70 meters deep into the rock. The word “Tobel” is Alemannic and describes a gorge surrounded by forest. A walk through the Eistobel takes around two hours, making it the perfect half-day excursion for the whole family. The Eistobel is always worth a visit – both in summer and in winter in the Allgäu. The Eistobel is only a few minutes by car from the Hotel zur Rose.

Family hiking tip

Breitach Gorge

One of the most popular attractions for family hiking vacations in the Allgäu is the Breitachklamm gorge. Created 10,000 years ago, it was only made accessible in the last century. Nowadays, the Breitachklamm gorge with its well-developed paths attracts 300,000 visitors every year. Hiking in the Breitachklamm gorge means pure adventure for young and old.

Lakes to discover

Alpsee hike

The Alpsee loop starts at the parking lot in Hohenschwangau, where you can already enjoy the view of Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle. The hike leads around the Alpsee, so that there is a new view of the royal castles around every corner.
