One family
- 6 generations
A family-run hotel with a history spanning six generations does not come along very often.
It is an honor to work in such a company with heart and passion and to give our guests a feeling of home.
Your Kresser family
Our history
1st generation
Alois Egger (great-grandfather of Mathilde Kresser, née Egger) acquires the pub business and farm. He ran the business together with his wife Veronika Egger.
2nd generation
Franz Josef Egger, son of Alois and Veronika Egger, was granted the personal right to serve wine, beer and spirits in 1872 and took over the business. He ran the pub with his wife Josefa until 1899.
1899 - 1917
The widow Josefa Egger received the concession in 1899. She tried to obtain the right to provide accommodation and to convert the pub into an inn, stating that her inn should be called “zur Rose”. However, the application for conversion was rejected. Josefa continued to run the business until her son Dominikus Egger received the license in 1917 and was able to take over the business.
Renewal of the bar
In 1910, the house was demolished and rebuilt with a different orientation.
3rd generation
In the summer of 1917, Dominikus Egger was granted a license and took over the business from his mother Josefa. Together with his wife Mathilde, he continued to run the pub until handing it over to his elder daughter Mathilde Egger (mother of Karl Ekkehard Kresser). Dominikus also tried to convert the pub into a restaurant, which was also rejected. However, the pub already bore the name “zur Rose”.
Wedding of Mathilde Egger and Karl Kresser
In September 1947, the older daughter Mathilde Egger marries the wood sculptor Karl Kresser.
4th generation
Daughter Mathilde and her husband Karl Kresser are now the 4th generation to run the family business. After the two failed attempts by Josefa and Dominikus Egger to obtain the right to provide accommodation and turn the pub into an inn, Karl Kresser finally prevailed and in 1959 obtained the right to provide accommodation, which he had wanted for so long and which was essential for the further development of the Egger/Kresser inn. The “zur Rose” pub had finally become the “zur Rose” inn and the establishment gradually developed into a hotel.
First conversion measures to a hotel
Daughter Mathilde and her husband Karl Kresser are now the 4th generation to run the family business. After the two failed attempts by Josefa and Dominikus Egger to obtain the right to provide accommodation and turn the pub into an inn, Karl Kresser finally prevailed and in 1959 obtained the right to provide accommodation, which he had wanted for so long and which was essential for the further development of the Egger/Kresser inn. The “zur Rose” pub had finally become the “zur Rose” inn and the establishment gradually developed into a hotel.
Further conversion measures
Around 1970, the wooden terrace was demolished and a solid new one built. This was followed in 1971 by the conversion of one half of the terrace into a conservatory with panoramic windows. The hotel kitchen was also extended in 1972. Karl Kresser and his wife Mathilde invested in recommending their hotel to others and made it regionally famous.
Conversion of the second floor
In 1981, the dance hall on the second floor was also converted into hotel rooms.
5th generation
The Rosewirt couple Karl and Mathilde Kresser have two children, Karl Ekkehard and Uta. Their son Ekkehard trained as a chef in a renowned hotel and took over the family business in 1981. He also put his heart and soul into developing the business and making it even better known.
Building a sauna
In order to offer hotel guests more comfort, a small sauna with a relaxation and massage room was built on the lower floor of the Rose in 1982.
Wedding of Ekkehard and Gertraud Kresser
In the winter of 1987, Ekkehard Kresser married his wife Gertraud Kresser (née Müller). They have three children Teresa, Christian and Amelie. Together, Ekkehard and Gertraud Kresser continue to run the family business Hotel Gasthof zur Rose.
Hotel extension
The next renovation project followed in 1994. The old hay barn was demolished and a completely new building with a total of ten hotel rooms and an event hall was constructed.
Reception
In order to offer hotel guests a perfect welcome on arrival, a separate hotel entrance with reception was built into the existing premises.
6th generation
Ekkehard Kresser runs the Rose with his wife. Of their three children, son Christian knew very early on that he wanted to continue the business. He trained as a chef and worked in several renowned establishments, mainly in Switzerland. In 2013, he attended the hotel management school in Heidelberg and completed his hotel business administrator with a training certificate. He will take over the business with his partner Ramona.
Renovation of hotel rooms & winter garden
The hotel rooms in the main building have been modernized and refurnished. There have also been changes in the restaurant; the conservatory has been renovated and made even cozier.
Installation elevator
An elevator was built into the existing building to provide easy access to each room on each floor. As a result, the sauna in the basement had to make way.
Wedding Christian & Ramona Kresser
In summer 2016, Christian married his wife Ramona Kresser (née Troll). They also have 3 children Leonie, Valerie and Emilie. Christian and Ramona Kresser will continue to run the business together.
Modernization of hotel rooms, restaurant & reception
In order to be able to offer hotel guests a high level of comfort in the future, the family modernized the hotel. In keeping with the Allgäu style, the hotel rooms, restaurant and reception were furnished with natural wood and modern furniture.
Extension hotel entrance
The hotel entrance has been extended and modernized for a more pleasant arrival. A cozy seating area offers the possibility to take a seat outside.
Kitchen remodeling
The kitchen, which was still equipped with a traditional oil stove, has been completely renovated and refurnished. A new stove and some new kitchen appliances now make it possible to maintain the high-quality Rose kitchen for the future.
Reconstruction of the event hall
The event hall has also been completely renovated. Lots of wood and modern elements that reflect the Allgäu charm. Two new areas were created from the large room. A cozy mountain view lounge for hotel guests was created in the front part and a modern restaurant area for events and a la carte service in the rear part.
Facade renovation
In the fall of 2024, there was a highlight in the history of the Rose. The whole house was given a new coat of paint. The shutters were painted in the same color as in the 1960s. The colors of the façade were matched to the interior of the house. With new lighting at the entrance and on the façade, the house is a real eye-catcher. Sustainability is also playing an increasingly important role with new windows in the main house and a PV system on the roof.
